I did not grow up an athlete. I found the weight room in my late thirties, which is late enough that the enthusiasm and the wear show up at the same time.

Nothing tore. There was no single bad rep I can point to. My shoulders started talking to me on pressing days, then my wrists on anything that pinned them under a bar, then my knees, which I had never once thought about in my life.

I was hurting all over and looking for options, and that is how I found bands. A little research in, I kept running into X3 ads with a guy talking about 600 lbs of force and a pile of other claims that sounded far too good to be true. The price at the time was $550. For a bar and some rubber, I thought that was insane.

Then a friend mentioned, completely out of the blue, that he had bought one. I had no idea he was even looking. He loved it.

So I tried it, and I was hooked.

I did go back and test weights once, later on. Our local high school opens its gym to the public, so I gave that about two weeks. One experiment, and it settled the question. I am doing bands for the rest of my life.

What I could not do was keep track of any of it. Band tension is a range rather than a number, and stacking two bands does not give you anything you can write in a notebook. I started building an app for myself in 2019. It took a lot of design and several versions that never shipped, including an Apple Watch only version I seriously considered, before I found the mix of features that actually unlocked my bands instead of just recording them. Rubber Bands was released in February 2024.

The piece I am proudest of is the programming. Bands carry nuance that iron simply does not. Getting a training plan to account for it and still feel right to the person doing it took years of tuning. Rubber Bands reads your last three sessions for an exercise, adds reps while they trend up, then moves you to the smallest heavier combination available and rescales your reps to match the jump in tension. That is the part you cannot get from a spreadsheet or from a lifting app that treats a band as a lighter dumbbell.

Why bands are kinder to joints

This is not a softer workout. It is the same effort arriving in a different shape, and the shape is the whole point.

The load is lightest where you are weakest

A band gets harder the further you stretch it. At the bottom of a press, where your shoulder is deep in flexion, there is almost nothing on you. At lockout, where the joint is stacked and your leverage is best, the band is at its heaviest. A bar does the exact opposite. It puts its full weight on you at the worst possible moment and gets easy right where you could handle more.

Nothing crashes on the way down

Gravity accelerates a weight toward the floor and your joints pay to stop it. A band pulls less hard the more it relaxes, so the lowering portion of the rep decelerates on its own. You still get the tension. You skip the impact at the end of the range, which is where a lot of accumulated wear actually comes from.

The part that hurts you is usually not the set

Getting out from under a heavy dumbbell press. Pulling one off a high rack at an awkward angle. Lugging 45 lb plates across a room. None of that is moving the needle on your training, and all of it puts a load in your hands while your body is in a compromised position. Everyone who has trained a while knows somebody who tweaked a shoulder doing exactly that, not during a set. A band weighs nothing until you pull it.

Nothing to drop and nothing to be pinned under

There is no spotter to find and no bar to get stuck beneath. The worst outcome of a set you misjudged is a set that ends early. Bands are also silent, which is the difference between training at 5am in a house with sleeping kids and not training at all. Inspect them for nicks and anchor them properly and that is the whole safety briefing.

Good at every age, for different reasons

“Good for all ages” usually means bland enough to offend nobody. That is not the claim here. Bands solve a genuinely different problem in each decade.

Twenties and thirties

You are not fragile yet, so the thing standing between you and training is friction. Bands remove it. They live in a drawer, they go in a carry-on, and they mean the gym being closed or being twenty minutes away stops being a reason. The joint mileage you do not put on now is training you still get to do at fifty.

Forties and fifties

Recovery becomes the limiter long before motivation does. You can still train hard. What you can no longer do is absorb the same beating between sessions and show up fresh. Bands let you keep the intensity and cut the joint cost, which in practice means more good sessions per month rather than a heroic week followed by a layoff.

Sixty and beyond

Muscle and balance stop being about how you look and start deciding how independent you are. This is the decade where training quietly stops being optional. It is also the decade where bands are the easiest thing to actually keep doing, which matters more than any other property they have.

For whatever it is worth, you are in reasonable company. Sylvester Stallone spent an entire career under barbells and switched to bands in his seventies for the same reason everybody else does. In his words, “your joints start to hurt, discs, back, knees, it just happens”.

The closest thing we have to an anti-aging drug

Somewhere in your thirties you start losing muscle. A few percent a decade at first, faster later, and faster still if nothing is asking your body to hold on to it. Strength goes before size does. Most people do not notice for years, because the first things to go are things nobody measures. The stairs get a little longer. Getting up off the floor becomes something you plan rather than something you do. You stop trusting yourself to catch a stumble.

That loss is not cosmetic. Muscle is where your body puts glucose. It is the load that tells your bones to stay dense. It is the reserve you spend when you get sick or have surgery, which is why muscle mass and grip strength keep showing up in the research as predictors of who comes through those things well and who does not. Losing it quietly means losing a margin you did not know you were carrying.

Here is the part I find genuinely remarkable. We have spent an enormous amount of money looking for something that reverses any of this, and the best answer anyone has produced is asking a muscle to work against resistance until it has a reason to adapt. It does not merely slow the decline. It puts back what was leaving. There is no pill that does that, and this one is free and its side effects all run in the right direction.

Which means none of this is really about lifting. It is about how many of your years you spend as the person deciding what to do, rather than the person being helped. That is the entire argument, and everything else on this page is just logistics.

Bands happen to be the version of it that nobody ages out of. They scale down to a couple of pounds, so there is no entry weight you have to already be strong enough for, and they stack past two hundred, so there is no ceiling to outgrow. You never buy the next size up. You just keep going.

Common questions

Are resistance bands as effective as weights for building muscle?

Yes, for building muscle and general strength. A 2019 systematic review by Lopes and colleagues pooled eight randomized controlled trials comparing elastic resistance against conventional weight machines and free weights, and found equivalent strength gains in the upper and lower body alike. The EMG work points the same way. Replace part of the load in a barbell squat with band tension and trunk muscle activation comes back indistinguishable through every phase of the lift. In upper body work, bands gave slightly less activation in the muscle being targeted and substantially more in the stabilizers around it. Where weights keep a real edge is carryover to heavy barbell lifting, which is a skill rather than a quantity of muscle.

Are resistance bands easier on your joints than weights?

Yes, and the reason is the shape of the resistance rather than the amount of it. A band's tension rises the further you stretch it, so the load is lightest at the bottom of a rep, where a shoulder or knee sits in its most compromised position, and heaviest near lockout, where the joint is stacked and your leverage is best. A fixed weight does the exact opposite. There is also no falling mass to decelerate, and nothing to unrack, carry across a room or get pinned underneath. That is a mechanical argument rather than a measured one, though. No trial appears to have compared joint loads directly between bands and weights. What the trials do show is that band training is effective and well tolerated in older adults across a range of health conditions.

Can you build muscle with resistance bands after 60?

Yes. This is where the evidence is strongest of all. A 2025 meta-analysis of 25 randomized controlled trials covering 1,318 participants found elastic band training improved every outcome it measured, with large effect sizes for chair stand, functional reach, timed up and go, and leg extension strength. Those are not gym metrics. They are the assessments clinicians use to predict falls and to judge whether somebody can keep living independently. Balance improved even in the shorter programs, and strength kept climbing the longer people trained.

Do resistance bands improve flexibility?

Yes, and possibly enough to replace your stretching routine. A 2023 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine pooled 55 studies and found resistance training improved range of motion with a moderate effect size of 0.73. Put head to head against dedicated stretch training, the difference between the two came out at 0.08 and nowhere near significance. The authors concluded that stretching before or after lifting may not be necessary to stay flexible. Body weight alone did not produce the effect, though. It took external load, which is exactly what a band supplies through a full range of motion without a rack.

Will resistance bands prepare you for heavy barbell lifting?

Not on their own, and this is the clearest limit of the tool. A band has no inertia. There is nothing to get moving and nothing that keeps moving once it is, so it feels nothing like a loaded bar. The strength you build does transfer between the two. The skill does not. Bracing under a few hundred pounds that wants to go somewhere is learned only by being under a few hundred pounds. If you compete in powerlifting, or you specifically want a big back squat, you want a bar in the mix as well as bands.

How do you track progress when band resistance is a range?

By trend rather than by an exact number. A band rated 30 to 60 lbs sits somewhere in that window depending on how far you stretched it, and stacking two does not produce a tidy figure to write in a notebook. Rubber Bands approximates your volume so there is still a line to follow, and as long as you stay with one brand of bands you can compare this month against last honestly. Think of it as a consistent yardstick rather than a true one. That is genuinely enough to drive progression, and it is not a number to quote at anybody.

Does the stretched position get enough tension for growth?

This is the open question in band training and I am not going to pretend it is settled. The same curve that spares your joints loads the deep, lengthened part of a rep the least, and there is a good argument that the stretched position is where a lot of growth actually happens. How much it matters is genuinely unresolved, and the biggest evidence-based names in lifting go back and forth on it. How long do resistance bands last?

Not forever, and that is the one running cost of training this way. A cast iron plate outlives you. Latex does not. A band stored in a hot car, or dragged repeatedly over a rough anchor point, will eventually fail. Check them for nicks before heavy sets and replace them once they start to look tired. The cost is small spread over a few years, but it is real, and it is why a proper anchor matters as much as which bands you buy.
